Working Through Fatigue

July 14th 2008 12:42
Exhausted

My sleep has been poor lately, so I've been working while tired quite a bit. Today, it feels like exhaustion is washing over me. Not only does this ruin any kind of motivation I'm attempting to conjure up, it makes it very difficult to concentrate.

One of the beautiful things about being a freelance writer is the ability to take breaks when needed. On days like today, there may be more breaks than usual. However, it's important to keep in check and make deadlines.

How do you manage your schedule when exhaustion hits? Do you push forward or do you take extra breaks? What is usually the cause of your exhaustion?

Hello Jenn,
I'm hearing you - a lack of sleep does suck big time ( I think that's what you were saying...).
A good way to get over it, a tried and true formula, is to go to the pub, drink some, have one more, then go home and DON'T set the alarm.
If that doesn't work, then try writing a sentence with five legitimate commas in it and see how you feel. You're welcome to use the above sentence if you're stuck for ideas!

LOL Thanks for chiming in with that advice, Chris! Yep, that's exactly what I was saying - I'm having trouble focusing this morning in the worst way. I think a visit to the pub would be a bad idea, though. LOL I'll try the sentence/comma bit, though.

Hi Jenn, unfortunately, with my work, I can't afford to take breaks. The only thing to battle exhaustion is lots of coffee and chocolate - I know, not a good diet but that's the only way at the moment. If I'm not too busy, I may go to my car and take a nap during lunchtime. The cause for my exhaustion is definitely lack of sleep.

Usually my lack of sleep is because I suddenly got inspired at three in the morning and wrote a whole bunch of crazy stuff.

I've been really tired for the last week or two though, even though I've been getting more than enough sleep. It's ANNOYING.

*Doesn't like sleeping*
