Freelance Tips - Freelance Writing, Freelance Jobs

Working on Weekends

August 23rd 2008 15:09

No one likes working on weekends, but you have to do what you have to do in this business. This is particularly true if you’re like me, and raising children alongside your career. I work during the days, mostly, and on weekends when I have help with the kids.

There are weekends when I would rather play in my flower gardens (well, the dream of flower gardens that is), visit my mother, or visit my best friend (both trips are few and far between, unfortunately). But, I know I have responsibilities to maintain, and I wage forward.

Working weekends isn’t necessarily a bad thing, mind you. There are times when the house is so quiet, and the day is so still that my mind is cleared enough to process meaningful thoughts and put together meaningful messages. This is very rare during the week (until school starts, that is).

So, on the weekends, I feel the ability to recharge my writing and prevent it from getting too stale. Do you work through your freelance writing assignments during the weekend? Do you send out queries on the weekend? Do you take weekends off?

I've found that, as a writer, there are NO days off!

Except for anime conventions.

And even then I ended up practically advertising one of my books...

I'm sure that's what I'll be doing with my books, too. LOL

Heh, yep. That's what happens when you write a lot. You sort of talk about it a lot, too.

I try not to, but it just sort of happens sometimes.

Same here. Of course, I'm really excited about getting my first book published and occasionally brag. BUT. I don't try to. *Nods*

Especially not when I can talk about Anime.

LOL I'm excited about the publication of my first book, too (SEPTEMBER 15th!!!). So, I know how you feel!

My sister is a big fan of anime and she's not a nerd at all.

I don't have a date for mine. But yay! What's yours about?

Anime is amazing. Seriously.

But I was cosplaying an RP character based off an anime at a convention and I RP based off anime and... I think I qualify...

It's a book about home building - The Complete Guide to Building Your Own Home and Saving Thousands on Your New House (publisher: Atlantic Publishing).

I'm working on my second book now, which I have until December 1st to finish. I hope the publisher can get it out soon after that because it would make a great gift.

Nice.

The only thing I would ever write a nonfiction book about would be writing. I'm not into much of anything else and I'm not exactly very academic either.

You will be academic once your degree is finished, though!

LIES.

LIES I TELL YOU.

Well I do lots of research into history/languages/mental disorders but it's all for fictional writing or school pretty much. Or for the hell of it. Or religious reasons.

Looks like I missed a little here - thank you for chiming in, Anonymous!

Try not to underestimate yourself, Dianna. I think you do anything you put your mind to and anything that is something of interest to you.

Who knows.

I actually got some work done today. I'm glad.

And... I like underestimating myself, actually. It's better than overestimating oneself. It's like how I let myself have a little shred of hope but don't let it grow too much. Too many times that my hopes have been ruined. *Shrug* But I'm crazy.

That makes sense! There's nothing wrong with that at all.

Really? So I'm not crazy? Damn.
