August 21st 2008 11:53
In the life of a freelance writing, it is typical to come upon days when this very question is asked. How is the problem of not knowing what to write about solved? There are many ways to approach this issue. Here are some basic tips:
1. Start and idea file consisting of newspaper clippings, magazine clippings, photocopies of research materials of interest, and notes that pop into mind at random moments.
3. Go “people watching.” Even though this could easily be construed as stalking or eavesdropping, watching people and picking up on behaviors or conversations is a very interesting way to get your pen moving.
These are just some of the many ways I solve the “what am I going to write about’ problem. This isn’t exactly writer’s block, so don’t worry about that taking over and ruining your writing session.
Do you solve the “what am I going to write about” problem in a different way? What are some of the solutions you’ve come up with?
