Tranquil Work Environment
September 17th 2008 18:06
Do you work in chaos? Is your desk or workspace the equivalent of a bomb going off in an office supply store? Do you spend more time trying to find things than working on things?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s time to get organized. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your work environment, that’s the first sign that you’re working in an area that isn’t conducive to productivity. Yes, it’s true, work environments that are neat and “tranquil” are where more work is produced.
Take five minutes NOW and organize that pile. Yes, that one. I’ll wait.
Done? You didn’t do it, did you? That’s okay; I didn’t really expect you to do it now. The point I’m trying to make is that you will feel better about your workday, what you’re accomplishing, and your level of productivity if your workspace isn’t in chaos. You know what they say, chaos breeds chaos. That’s the last thing you want in an already busy schedule.
What should you start with first? In my case, I find it’s easier to start with what I can throw away or recycle. Then, I move on to what needs to be filed. From there, I sort my pending files to make sure none of those can be put away. It all depends on what you’re working on, though, and exactly “what” is cluttering your desk. My desk is always a paperwork, book, and file pile. (With a coffee cup or several mixed in there.)
What is cluttering up your workspace right now? How long do you think it’ll take to clear some of the clutter? Do you think it’ll take longer to sort some of it than it does to read . . . this blog post??
