Setting Self-Imposed Deadlines
October 11th 2008 15:22
I’ve found myself venturing back into the world of deadline driven work. My schedule used to be primarily comprised of “post this when you have time,” or “you’re free to make your own schedule” type of work. While that was rewarding to a point, it really caused some unexpected laziness.
Now that I’m back in the realm of “you have three days to finish this piece or we’re assigning it to someone else” type situations, I have to get myself back into the swing of things. This is the type of schedule I lived and breathed by during the first half (or more) of my career, so this should be easy to slide back into . . . right?
I’ve noted before that safety nets are the sure fire way to prevent missing deadlines. My safety net includes self-imposed deadlines. Freelancers have been working this trick for years, and if it ain’t broke – don’t fix it, right? I set my self-imposed deadlines three days before the hard deadline. That way, I have plenty of time to get the work in if something happens in my family that soaks up my time, or if I become ill.
Do you set self-imposed deadlines?
