Set a Fake Deadline, Save Your Butt!
August 22nd 2008 23:02
Of course we all want to stay on track. Be a deadline you’ve imposed on yourself, or one imposed by an editor you’d like to stay in good graces with, it’s important to maintain your work schedule and stay on track. How, though, can freelance writers who are the disorganized or forgetful type achieve this?
I used to be very paranoid about missing deadlines. At one point, I was so paranoid that I would work on websites, for newsletters, or for publications that were deadline driven. This wasn’t because I was an unreliable freelancer, but because I was afraid of becoming one. Silly, isn’t it, how something like that really stopped me in my tracks and prevented me from furthering my career.
One way I alleviated this fear was by taking the imposed deadlines and moving them back to a “me-based” deadline. For example, if I had to turn in a piece by every Tuesday, I set myself a Sunday deadline. In my opinion, it’s always better to be early than it is to be late. This solved the problem right away because, for the work that was due monthly, it really felt like that was the real “finish by” date.
How do you safeguard yourself against missing deadlines?
