Freelance Tips - Freelance Writing, Freelance Jobs

In the begining...

October 19th 2006 12:37
Welcome, dear reader!

I've been working at a dead end job as an office manager for nine years. While the work is enjoyable and creativly satisfying, I've grown increasingly dissillusioned with my boss. Sound familiar? Sure it does. I've put my house up for sale, and when it's gone, I'M gone...headed for greener, warmer pastures and a home with no mortgage so I can attempt to live the dream of being self employed.

Since we're in the 'getting to know each other' phase, let me tell you how I got here. I graduated from high school in 1988, then attended college for 2-1/2 years as a journalism major. (Stop screaming QUITTER, m'kay? Thanks.) During that time period, I was employed (though not gainfully) as first a clerk in a local library, then promoted to Branch Librarian. Wonderful job, that. Alas, the pay sucked wind and 'real' life forced me to find a 'real' job. Much to my horror, I found myself waitressing at a local resort for the next six years.

In 1996 I met my husband, and in 1997 I quit the waitressing job, taking a huge cut in pay to become the office manager here. We sell garden accessories and florist supplies wholesale...when I came on board, our sales were right around 500K. Now, they're approaching a million. I handle all the customer accounts, design and maintain the website, create all our advertising material, and keep the business running smoothly while my boss is out galavanting. My reward? Nine years later, I'm making 10.40 an hour. The boss is making what I make in a year in a month and a half. While grateful at first, said boss is now NOT and spends a good portion of time whining about our lack of profit. I've printed out plenty of reports illustrating that the boss is SPENDING too much, and it has nothing to do with productivity or sales, but it has fallen on deaf ears. The boss recently spent nearly a thousand dollars on craft materials for personal use, while I struggle to pay my mortgage.

Yes, yes...it's the perogative of a business owner to reap the rewards of sucess and perhaps I'm wrong for being jealous. So sue me. Either way, I came to the conclusion that I want to be the boss from now on and keep all the money my business earns. I've started this blog so I can share my adventures with you, and hopefully provide you with tips, tricks, and much more so you can quit your damn job someday, too.

Quit my damn job? Never I say! Orble blogging is the first (paid) job I have ever recieved so it'll be silly if I quit. Besides, you have no idea how much employers love seeing 'paid blogger' or 'writer' on your resumé, even when applying to be a waiter or something.

But cheerio, good luck with it all.

Thanks Ahmed...I'm actually in the process of trying to quit my REAL job as an office manager and take on things like blogging and other freelance projects as my primary source of income.

I'm really curious about your husband's role in all this?

If you don't want to answer because that's too personal ... that's okay ... but that's the main question I want to ask in relation to your post ...

Her husband is her boss, how obvious can it be?

Nope, my husband is NOT my boss. He cares for our preschool child and our home full time. My career had better earning potential and hours much more suitable for us when we started our family.

I've chosen not to reveal the name of my boss or my company...just in case.

Hmm, it'll slip

I think the problem in your life is one of dominion...

Ahmed, I've found when you have a child any sense of dominion you ever had dissapears...so that's a valid point for sure.

The complaining about my real job won't be repeated...with tomorrow's post we move on. Less whining, more information about my freelancing adventures.

oh... no more whining?

Well being stuck in a dead end job sucks I reckon, interstingly enough writing a blog really isn't a dead end job, yet I get paid less than 50c a week... but its still more fun than what my future job will be...

Hello fellow freelancer

I am looking forward to following your travels as I too freelance. I decided to use maternity leave as my chance to start working from home and it's working so far. I am just starting to look into logo design and registration etc so I can market myself instead of relying on word of mouth.

Hey Ahmed,
In response to your previous post, do employees really love seeing paid blogger/writer in your resume? Im a struggling journalist myself

Just popped by to say good on you for not taking the boss' crap. I think it's a great move and congratulations for having the courage to do so. 'At the end of the day' (i hate people who say this, and thus must hate myself) you'll respect yourself for not being his lapdog and doing all the hard work and he will too once he realises your worth, much above what you get in fiscal terms.

Should I call you FR or FT?

I enjoyed your story, and am pleased to meet you.

I think you'll find so many 'in here' who will relate and I look forward to hearing your stories. I am also a freelance journo(amongst other things) at the moment. I think we will all gain much information from your blog.

Welcome (only been blogging for three weeks myself),

Lilla.

TonyK, all I can say is I have been getting more responses from the various dead end jobs uni students apply to after beggining to write here. BUt most those jobs are telemarketing and the like.

If your a journalist you'd have to be crazy not to mention this 'work' of yours.

Wow, thanks everyone for the wonderful welcomes!

Glad to know that there are others like me out there...I'm sure we can learn much from each other. I suppose that's the whole point of my starting a blog with this theme.

Lilla, you (and everyone else) can call me Rowan.

Nice to meet you all, and I look forward to getting to know you better!

This sounds familiar to me...
I never had a job in my life and I never will!!!
Having a job limits and damages a persons capabilities for succes... not all jobs... but the majority do so!!!
Environments can harm one`s self confidence and most important one`s believes and Faith for Doing Better!!! Quiting a job should be the first real goal for anyone who wants to change their life!!! And after that the next goal should be their dreams...
We human beings have the power to create better than anything on this Planet!!! Why not use this at it`s full potential?? Try to improve yourself for the winner everyone of us is here to be!!! The only thing that can keep ourselves from being the best we can be is ourselves... we are the only obstacle betwen us and our goals!!!

Wish you all the best!!!

This looks fun...

Welcome, even if I'm a bit late... eh, leave me alone.

And good luck.

I personally believe anyone can make it if they're stubborn enough... just takes time.
