Follow Your Muse
August 2nd 2008 22:34
I’ve been listening and making note of this freelance writing tip for over a decade. It seems everywhere I turn; there are articles, blog posts, and comments geared specifically toward following your muse. So, why am I blogging about this today?
I am for one reason: I’m finally listening.
It isn’t that I haven’t been following this freelance writing tip all along in one way or another, but I admit I haven’t been tapping into its potential as deeply as I could have. I haven’t been willing to leave my comfort zone, venture out into uncharted waters, and really pursue new things without fear of failure.
While failure (and rejection) are both very real and very difficult aspects of anyone’s freelance writing career, it should not be stifling us from really digging deep and doing what it is we want to do. Why can’t we write about the topics we love? Why do we have to write what is expected of us? Why shouldn’t we focus on our interests as a means of providing the bread and butter of our careers?
It’s easy to fall into ruts. It’s easy to churn out dribble just to earn a check, rather than walking the creative walk and talking the creative talk. It’s easy to fear change and focus on what we think is stable income.
When was the last time you took a leap? Are you following your muse?

Eventually the topics you love most will bring enough food to the table but while you're building your business it helps to take on anything you can get unless it conflicts with your personal code.
Find your balance, your happy medium.
