Freelance Tips - Freelance Writing

Favorable Topics, or Just Funds?

October 15th 2008 13:21

When you’re setting up your query goals, do you choose:
· topics that interest you the most, or are things you have experience with?
· topics based on how much earnings will come in once finished?

I’ve been in the freelance writing industry since 1999 and, while that isn’t a long time to some, it feels as though I’ve been around the block and back when it comes to certain things. This includes how to choose topics to query.

In the beginning, I would send queries out for anything and everything. I was taught by my mentor that writes have a great opportunity to secure work because any topic can be “learned and written.” Yes, this is true . . . BUT . . .

· What if the topic bores you?
· What if the topic turns out to be too complex?
· What if the topic goes beyond your experience or expertise?
· What if . . . there are too many what if questions!?

I agree that subjects and topics can be picked up, learned, and written . . . over time. If the topic is beyond your scope, you really have no business sending the query. If the topic will bore you quickly because it doesn’t fall within your interests, you’ll be doing a disservice to yourself, as well as the contractor.

The bottom line: think before you click. If the topic isn’t favorable in the least, move on to another lead. If the topic is beyond your scope, don’t assume you can pick up the knowledge in a week’s time and produce quality content. Be realistic, especially if the job calls for a long-term relationship.
