Back to [Writing] Basics

"Mommy, I don't know what to write abut today."
Each day afterschool, my three children and I tackle homework. This is homework we've decided as parents to assign to them in preparation for when the real deal comes along from their teachers. Also, we want to keep learning an everyday activity in this household. The sentence above is one I hear often, so I researched a worksheet to use as tool for breaking writer's block and keeping the idea train running yesterday.
It dawned on me, though, that these are the same tactics I've already been using in my own career. Why didn't I just break it down into bite sized chunks for my six, seven, and eight year olds to understand? Needless to say, I found a worksheet that we're going to use as a tool in today's homework assignments. Each worksheet contains prompts that encourages children to create lists (My favorite foods are...). We'll keep these worksheets in their pencil boosk when they're finished.
Sound familiar? We're creating an idea file!!! For school aged children, no less! Isn't it funny how writing careers mesh so easily with other aspects of our lives? How do you see your writing career meshing with your own life? Does it happen regularly?
