A Sick Day is on the Horizon

July 29th 2008 14:46

I've often written about how, when you're self-employed, there are no sick days. Particularly if you're contracted to post blogs on a daily basis for one or more websites. So, really, there is no room for being sick.

I have been fighting a cold for a few days and, of course, it is getting worse before it gets better. I'm having a difficult time managing the household, let alone managing my business. As a result, I'm one day behind. Rather than sending my contractors into a panic, I'll catch up today and try working ahead.

The lesson: Create a saftey net for sick days. They're going to happen, so it is best to be prepared.

How do you handle sick days? If you're sick for several days in a row, do you fall behind and have the chance of losing your contracts? Do you have a safety net in place? Let's discuss!

I'm sad to admit that i have ZERO safety net in place. I've been intending to plan ahead, write ahead, and prepublish my blog so that is a worry I don't need to worry about. But wanting to do that and getting it done are two different things.

Thankfully, these Writing Bursts I'm getting into the habit of are helping a great deal in that regard.

When it comes to client work I tend to do what you're doing and just push through. I focus only on the most important tasks, and I take more breaks. When new opportunities come up I try to schedule them into the future a little so I'll have time to recover.

I also heap on the vitamins, orange juice, and chicken soup or see the doctor as soon as possible. If you hit the illness on the head you'll recover faster.

I've also been known to take a sick day on the very first day of feeling ill. I sleep, the whole day, as much as possible, and deliberately avoid doing anything but rest. I've found this often helps me recover more swiftly which means less accumulating downtime.
